ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
Facilities

We are currently housed in our new location in the East Wing of the Ellen & Melvin Gordon Center for Integrative Sciences Building aka GCIS. This is a new 430,000 square foot Interdivisional Research Building lab facility at 929 E 57th Street, which brings together faculty, staff and research from the Biological and Physical Sciences, and research institutes including the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the James Franck Institute, and the Institute for Biophysical Dynamics. The James Franck Institute in the GCIS Building has the machine shops, electronic shops, stockrooms, materials preparation facilities, house gases, electron microscopes and computers needed for our research. We have a team of support staff who run these facilities and provide clerical support for the Institute members.

Computer facilities
The JFI supports group computer rooms with UNIX, PC and Macintosh computers for use by JFI people. A full-time computer manager and part-time assistants maintain the computers, file systems and software.

Student Shop
Students, staff, and faculty are instructed in the use of saws, mills, drills, lathes, measuring tools, and in design and safety procedures. They grind their own cutters and make a few simple parts in order to become self-sufficient in machining metals and plastics, thus gaining unsupervised access to the shop.

Materials Preparation Laboratory
This lab, supported by the Materials Center has facilities for sample fabrication, processing, patterning, and characterization.

JFI Electronics Shop
Two degreed Electronics personnel working in the modification, design, and construction of custom electronics for all types of scientific research. It is possible to have them incorporate both the mechanical and electrical aspects of the experiment in their design.

Stockroom
This is the Ace Hardware for Physics and Chemistry research labs, where a fairly complete line of office products, computer supplies, plumbing, electrical, fasteners, some tools, basic chemicals, glassware, adhesives, paint, vacuum supplies, etc. are stocked. We also have in hard copy a variety of scientific equipment company catalogues of many different kinds.

Building and Lab Manager
The Building & Lab Manager along with Facility & University Contractors assists researchers to repair, set up, or modify their laboratories or equipment to better achieve their research goals.
