That was taken about 1962 by a woman who was Willie Zachariasen's
technician and also a professional photographer. It was used in a UC
calendar (1963), of all things.
I am grateful for the picture because I have the calendar, but the
picture
is small and low resolution.
I was doing fluid mechanics at the time, and Herb Anderson (who was chairman)
let me know it was OK for Chandra to do fluid mechanics, but not me. But I had
a Sloan, and went ahead anyway. Herb was
overjoyed years later when he edited the Physics Vade Mecum, which stemmed
from Fermi's famous compilation. I did a chapter on low temperature physics
and a chapter on fluid dynamics.
So much for bumptious kids.
