ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
Other Institutes in the Physical Sciences Division
The James Franck Institute is a research
institute within the physical
science division of the University of Chicago. The
Division includes several other such institutes. Each
brings together faculty from several academic disciplines
in the physical sciences. These disciplines are astronomy
and astrophysics, chemistry, computer science, geophysical
sciences, mathematics, physics, and statistics.
One externally funded research initiative, MRSEC, plays a large role in JFI research. This is described
below. In addition some JFI faculty participate in several
other research initiatives.
Materials Research Science
and Engineering Center
The University of Chicago materials Research Science and
Engineering Center (MRSEC), funded by the National Science
Foundation, is nearly one hunderd scientistsprofessors,
postdoctoral associates, students and techniciansworking
