Thoughts about the relationship between various types of shear thickening, and about a neat experiment by a team at Cornell, led by our former grad student Xiang Cheng (now on the faculty in ChemE at U Minnesota), that observes hydroclusters by fast confocal microscopy. Much more detail about the relationship between various types of shear thickening and about mechanisms determining the lower and upper bounds for the range of shear stress over which discontinuous shear thickening is observable can be found in the 4/7/12 entry and in the 11/23/13 entry.
