First, Simon beam-wrote over a monolayer of gold, and then washed the non-beam-written areas with toluene, thus leaving a lattice of holes. He then deposited a few microliters of cobalt on top. One sees the cobalt particles as large blobs in the holes, surrounded by a denser array of gold mixed with cobalt along the grid lines.
