Double Well chaos plots
Click the picture to run an applet to explore the chaotic motion of a particle in double-well potential. You can use the applet to make a bifurcation diagram or to see a phase plot.

hints

  • The starting conditions show the particle in the negative-x well. To get it into the other well, increase the "force" parameter until the particle explores both wells, then reduce it again. If you find yourself in back in the negative well, try again.

  • The range of forces and x's are chosen to make a nice bifurcation diagram. But the program will work for a wider range of forces and x's. Just fill in the blanks to increase the plotting range and hit "new plot".
  • When you hit "new plot" the picture shown is always the bifurcation diagram. To see a phase plot on a new plot, click the phase button immediately after new plot

  • Why does the bifurcation plot look different in the two wells?

  • Why is the threshold for exploring both wells larger when you are increasing the force than when you are decreasing it?
