Closing a bag shape: induced ridge formation
Make a bag shape from a piece of office paper by taping the two long edges together.
Each taped edge forms a cone-like
disclination
.
The line between the two disclinations sharpens into a
stretching ridge
Now tape the two halves of the open edge of the bag together transversely, with the lefthand seam meeting the right-hand seam, like this:
