Vibrated dense suspension

A prototype system exhibiting a strong shear-thickening phenomenon is a 50/50 (by volume) mixture of cornstarch and cold water. When vibrated, the suspension spouts semi-solid tentacles or can sustain holes. movie. Picture is about 5 cm across, vibration frequency is 100-200 hz, with peak acceleration about 1 g.
