-------------------------------------- Date: 1/29/96 3:27 PM To: Fred Stafford From: Margaret Carey --------------------------------------------------------- Title : NSF WINS TEMPORARY REPRIEVE--EFFORTS CONTINUE TO GAIN FULL YEAR'S FUNDING Type : Information/Action Agency : NSF Date : January 29, 1996 Volume 5, Number 3 --------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE According to congressional staff and NSF officials, contacts with Congress were in the thousands. Your contactsofrom letter writing campaigns by whole departments to personal meetings, letters and telephone callsomade a difference and set the stage for an attempt to fully fund NSF for the remainder of FY 1996 in a targeted appropriations bill. The immediate result of your efforts was the passage of the temporary continuing resolution to keep the government open until March 15. NSF is now operating at the FY 1996 conference level of $3.18 billion, the level it likely would have received had the VA, HUD, and Independent Agencies bill not been vetoed. BUT, THE BATTLE GOES ON . . . Representative Vernon Ehlers (R-MI), the Vice Chairman of the Science Committee, is preparing a "Dear Colleague letter" for Representative Bob Livingston (R-LA), Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, which asks him to fund NSF for the full fiscal year, as was done with NIH. ACS Federal Funding Network members are strongly encouraged to contact their representatives and ask them to support Representative Ehlers' effort by calling Ehlers' office to sign onto the letter _by_Thursday,_February 1,_1996_. Please feel free to contact us for any information on congressional telephone or fax numbers that you may need. Lastly, please send us a note about your representative's response so we can monitor the success of this initiative. ########################################### ACS Federal Funding Networks Dept. of Gov't Relations & Science Policy Office of Science & Technology Policy 1155 16th Street, NW Washington, DC 20036 202/452-2127 fax:202/872-6206 e-mail: nsfnet@acs.org or nihnet@acs.org ##########################################
