The Institute for the Study of Metals remained in its temporary quarters in the West Stands of Stagg Field (right) until 1951 when all three institutes moved into the new Research Institute building (left). However, the cryogenic facilities remained i n the West Stands until 1957, when the low-temperature building was completed. The Institute for the Study of Metals occupied the southern half of the West Stands. Immediately north of the metals institute is the squash court area (ivy-covered section) where Chicago Pile No. 1 was built and went critical on December 2, 1942. The West Stands were torn down in the 1960s. This picture, taken about 1955, looks north along Ellis Avenue.
