Bioelectronics: An Endless Frontier Across Disciplines
Life communicates through ions, while machines operate through electrons. Bioelectronics bridges these languages, enabling technologies that sense biological activity, stimulate physiological processes, and deliver adaptive treatments. This talk will explore the materials chemistry underlying bio-integrated electronics, emphasizing soft interfaces that integrate intimately with living systems while remaining functional under deformation. Examples from our group, including supramolecular materials, skin-like interfaces that digitize muscle activity, and plant interfaces that monitor and modulate electrophysiological signals, will demonstrate emerging opportunities in human–machine interaction. The talk will also highlight the interdisciplinary challenges that must be overcome to translate flexible bioelectronics into reliable, scalable, and clinically meaningful technologies.
About the JFI Colloquium: The James Franck Institute Colloquium is a monthly event inviting distinguished scholars from research institutions around the globe to share creative, groundbreaking research at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and materials science. As an interdisciplinary institution, the JFI welcomes researchers and students from a wide variety of scientific disciplines to attend and partake in lively discussion. Colloquium speakers are nominated by JFI faculty and selected annually by the colloquium committee. Find the full calendar on the JFI website.
